>Long time ago (I can’t remember the exact year), many Korean-Americans were upset to learn that an American Embassy at Seoul compared Koreans to field rats. If my memory is correct, he tried not to agitate Koreans by implying that Koreans like to get together in groups when somebody proposes something to do. At that time, I simply accepted his implications.

오래 전, (정확한 해가 기억나지 않습니다) 많은 미국의 한인들이 주한미대사관의 한 미국인이 한국사람을 들쥐로 비유한 일 때문에 분개했던 일이 있습니다.
제 기억이 정확하다면, 한국인들이 누가 어떤 일을 진행할 때 같이 몰려서 행동하는 것을 함축했던 비유라고 설명함으로써 한국인들이 그 문제로 많이 노여워하지 않도록 애썼던 것으로 압니다. 그리고 당시 저는 그의 설명을 단순히 받아들였습니다

그러나, 제가 이 곳 미국에서 20년 넘게 살아보니, 저는 "쥐"란 단어에 여러가지 뜻이 들어있음을 발견합니다. '매국노','배신자', '배교자'등, ..
한 십대에게 물어보니, 그는 훨씬 정확한 정의를 가르쳐주었습니다. 그것은 "두 얼굴의 사나이"입니다.

>When I watch the way S. Korean tried to help and provide all kinds of aids to the victims of the train explosion in Ryongchon, I can’t but remember the word that was used to describe Koreans by an Embassy at Seoul. But something must be wrong as if the whole nation swarm in flocks to beg N. Korea to accept their aids and helps. Looks like the whole S. Korean are competing each other in helping the victims to show their generosity and mercy. It seems to me that they will be arrested, tortured, and executed later if they don’t show such a big gesture. The exactly same as N. Koreans do to their great leader, Kim Jeong Il. In the world history, probably, S. Korea might be the first country to show such an incomprehensible behavior.

한국인들이 룡천의 기차폭발 희생자를 갖은 방법으로 지원하려 애쓰는 방식을 보면서, 이해할 수 없지만, 옛날 주한미대사관에서 한국인을 묘사했던 그 단어를 떠올립니다. 만일 전체 국가가 북한측에 자신들의 지원과 도움을 받아달라고 애걸하는 양떼들처럼 몰리고 있다면 이것은 잘못된 일입니다.
남한인들 전체가 서로 누가 더 희생자들에게 관대함과 자비를 갖고 있는지 보이려고 경쟁하는 현상으로 보입니다.
그리고 제가 볼 적에는 그 현상들의 이면에는 마치 그들이 지금 그렇게 행동하지 않으면, 나중에 잡혀서 고문이나 처형이라도 당하게 되는 게 아닐까 싶을 정도입니다.
그 똑같은 행동으로 지금 북한인들이 그들의 위대한 지도자 김정일에게 복종하고 있으며, 아마도 남한은 그런 불가사이한 행동을 따라하는 첫번째 나라로 보아야 할 것입니다.

>Helping the victims is a right thing to do. No question about it. But I can’t help but point out that S. Korea has shown two faces in dealing with N. Korea. First of all, letting alone many children in S.K who are skipping school lunches and homeless peoples in the subway entrances, S. Korea officially has never shown her concerns to the lost human right of N. Koreans under such a horrible dictator, Kim Jeong Il.

희생자를 돕는 것은 의문의 여지없이 올바른 일입니다. 그러나, 나는 남한이 북한을 다루는 데 있어 두 가지 얼굴을 보여왔다는 사실을 지적하지 않고는 도울 수 없습니다.
그 중 첫째는 남한의 많은 어린이들이 점심을 걸르며 학교를 다니며, (역주: 아침거르는 애들도 있는데요... ) 집없는 사람들이 지하도입구에서 기거한다는 사실입니다. 남한관료들은 김정일같은 공포스런 독재자가 내리누르는 북한의 인권상실에 대해 관심을 보인 적이 한번도 없습니다.

>S. Koreans has never swarmed to show their mercy and help those fugitive peoples from N. Korea, whose lives are much more miserable than the victims in Ryongchon. In addition, they don’t pay that kind of attention to whether the underground tunnels for infiltration are being built under their houses. They have shown a great interest in soccer games, stupid and silly movies and TV dramas, the nude of sexy actresses and TV talents, etc. Why all of a sudden the whole nation swarms and is anxious to show its great mercy just like field rats?

남한사람들은 북한에서 탈주한 동포들을 위해 자기들의 동정심을 떼로 몰려 표현한 적이 한 번도 없습니다. 그들의 처지는 이번 룡천의 희생자들보다 훨씬 비참한데도 말입니다.
덧붙이자면, 그들은 자기들의 집 아래로 침투용 땅굴이 기어들어오는지에도 관심이 없습니다. (역주: 알기만 하면 관심있습니다. 전 지원금을 낸 일도 있습니다. )
남한 사람들은 축구경기, 영화, 드라마, 누드 같은 것에 지대한 관심을 갖고 보고 있습니다. 그러면서, 난데없고 들쥐같은 전국적 동정의 물결은 어찌 된 일입니까 ?

>I don’t want to call my people field rats, I really don’t want. There are so many Koreans whom I love, cherish, and respect. So, I am shouting to the blue sky in America:

나는 내 동포들이 들쥐로 불리는 것을 바라지 않습니다. 진실로 그런 소리는 듣기 싫습니다. 한국에는 제가 사랑하고 친애하며, 존경하는 많은 분들이 있습니다. 그래서 저는 미국의 푸른 하늘에 대고 이렇게 외칩니다.
